-US Department of Education

To be successful in college and beyond, we all need to learn how to W.A.L.K. before we can run.

So what does it mean to W.A.L.K. through your Freshman 40?
W – Walk with others. You can’t and shouldn’t try to do this alone ... you need to do it in community, WITH OTHERS!
A – Adjust Slowly. What you are embarking on is HUGE. IT will represent one of the biggest transitions. You need to take your time and ADJUST SLOWLY!
L – Live and Learn Intentionally. You need to Live Your Journey on purpose and with purpose. Don’t be passive, LIVE AND LEARN INTENTIONALLY!
K – Keep Going, Don’t Give Up. No matter how difficult, you have to learn persistence. You can do this, but you gotta KEEP GOING AND DON”T GIVE UP!

What is coaching? As someone with a Masters Degree in Counseling I had my concerns about Coaching. These concerns came from a lack of understanding. But as I learned more I realized that the very things that drove me nuts as a counselor were the things that as a coach I could do differently! Counseling looks backward to find causes behind issues that rooted in the past. Coaching takes a glimpse at the past but looks forward at the possibilities. Counseling is typically for people in a place of hurt or pain that need healing. Coaching is for those that are relatively healthy and just need direction and a plan to move towards a more fulfilling life!

All of this seems “theoretical”, even to me. So I looked for a better explanation and found it while at my son’s recent soccer game. You see his coach was out of town so there was a parent who stepped in. I watched the boys wander aimlessly. They did their best, but had no one giving them direction; no one had a specific plan. Sure the “goal” was simple, score as many goals as possible and win the game, but how to do this was a bit more complicated. Without a game plan, clear objectives, and specific responsibilities these boys were frustrated and discouraged ... these boys needed their coach!

We are all like these boys, regardless of our age. We have a goal in mind and perhaps an idea as to how to get there. However, most of us are frustrated and discouraged feeling like we are spinning our wheels, and wandering aimlessly. This is where I have been much of my life: having an idea in mind, but not knowing how to get there. So I too have learned the powerful impact of coaches in my own life and currently am coached myself.

Whether you are a parent or a student looking ahead to college, you have an amazing adventure ahead of you. Graduating from high school is a pinnacle experience, and a big step towards becoming an adult. But with it comes great expectations and perhaps some uneasiness or even fears about the future. All of these are good things to be feeling! You should feel an incredible sense of accomplishment for having graduated from high school! You should be excited about the future and the unlimited possibilities in front of you. But you should also have a “healthy fear” about going to college and the amazing adventure known as your transition from being a teenager to becoming an adult!

In the midst of all of this, you do not need to feel like you have to go it all alone. Having a coach by your side will help you know what to expect, which is a very important step that most graduating high school seniors overlook. Having a coach will give you the confidence to move forward in life knowing that you have someone by your side that has been there.

Parents, of this is your first child going to college or your last, you are still filled with a number of emotions. You are proud, excited, and filled with fear ... chances are that you are also feeling a sense of loss. You aren’t alone and together we can work through this!

Students, get ready for the adventure of a lifetime. But be prepared for some stormy seas as you head into “The Perfect Storm” filled with amazing highs and discouraging lows. But don’t go it alone! With the guidance of a coach, and the synergy that comes from sharing with others who are in the same boat, you will not only weather the storm, but come out the other side with a new sense of purpose, unbelievable confidence, and the realization that you have the ability to take on the world!

Live Your Journey is about focusing on our journey and not the destination. The destination is not all it’s cracked up to be – it’s unknown and very elusive. So, instead of trying to “get there” and focus on the destination, together we need to come to understand the power, excitement, drama, and intrigue of what it means to LIVE YOUR JOURNEY...
